Implementing The New Urban Agenda :

The Role of Urban Thinkers Campuses

and The City WeNeed

Organised by:

Arcadis, a Leadpartner and Sponsor of the World Urban Campaign

The World Urban Campaign, one of the largest global advocacy platforms for cities, has been instrumental in mobilizing Urban Thinkers and elaborating a new urban paradigm towards Habitat III. Together, they have produced The City WeNeed, a ground-breaking manifesto defining a set of principles and drivers of change that describe a new paradigm, as well as a set of implementable and tangible urban solutions to deliver better cities. This has been possible through a series of Urban Thinkers Campuses held in 2015-16 and attended by more than 7,800 people from 2,100 organizations in 124 different countries and 25 cities around the world.

Implementing has been the mantra for urban thinkers in the process towards Habitat III. Urban Thinkers have gathered a sample of Urban Solutions that are innovative, stimulating, inspiring, ambitious and grounded in the reality of their communities and practice. Through a global appeal, about 165 Urban Solutions were gathered, meant to illustrate how The City WeNeed and the New Urban Agenda can be implemented either locally or in multiple contexts, globally.

Solutions are meant to inspire all stakeholders at the Habitat III Conference in order to better envision the implementation of the New Urban Agenda. For Urban Thinkers, it is imperative to gather the most prominent innovative  practicesthat can be considered as critical avenues for sustainable solutions. That process helps develop realistic expectations based on practical action. After Habitat III, Urban Solutions will be subject to further scrutiny and commitment to action, geared toward simplementation through multi-stakeholders partnerships coordinated by the World Urban Campaign partners.

Key questions will drive the debate of this side event:

  1. What are the key principles and critical drivers of change to implement the New Urban Agenda?
  2. What are the main solutions – areas of innovations and trends likely to generate results towards the implementation of the New Urban Agenda?
  3. What will be the practical mechanisms for partners to implement the solutions ?
  4. What will be the role of Urban Thinkers Campuses ? On what issues and solutions your Urban Thinkers Campuses would focus ?
  5. How can/will your organization commit to implementing urban solutions ? What will be the particular actions ?
